Student Led Discussions
Sage on the stage or guide on the side?
Teachers sometimes feel that a class will only succeed if they do the majority of the talking. It is a natural feeling since educators care about their students and they want to make sure that they succeed. However, the real world is demanding for individual thinkers that can create, vote, discuss, and utilize the resources around them. Therefore, it becomes necessary to have students take control of the classroom and lead their own discussion.
Of course guidelines will need to be placed in order to make sure classroom discussions are respectful, constructive, and meaningful. This page contains links to help teachers conduct classroom discussions that are led by students. Much of these links can be found on the Science page as they are supported by the NGSS. Even though some of these links may contain science ideas, they can still be used for other subjects as well.
