Synchronous and asynchronous communication has been recently popped up in conversations due to the rise of technology. They matter in education concerning online classes or home schooling.
Synchronous communication is when an educator and students communicate in real time. For example, and online class might hold a discussion over a topic using Google Hangouts with instant feedback.
Tools for synchronous communication: Google Hangout, Idroo, Stormboard, Skype, Twitter, Facebook.
Asynchronous communication is when comments or discussions happen at different times. For example, a teacher might post a question and get feedback two days later instead of instantaneously.
Tools for asynchronous communication: E-mail, Padlet.
Both modes of communication are valuable and can be used in different ways. It really depends on what the educator wants to accomplish. Depending on how one wants to use those tools, anyone of them can be synchronous or asynchronous.
